The Principal
What do Tennis, Basketball and Rugby League have in common? At first you may say…well…nothing. A cursory look identifies all three as ball sports. Dig a little deeper and you note that they all originated in the late 1800s. In 1891, James Naismith needed a way to keep athletes fit in the North American winter creating a game played indoors with soccer balls (yes, I know they are called footballs) and peach baskets nailed to the wall.
Rugby League came about from an argument about professionalism versus amateurism in the game of Rugby Union. Working class players couldn’t afford to take time off to play footy so they split from the Rugby Union and formed the Rugby League. In 1895, 22 Clubs in Northern England formed a professional code of Rugby; 13 players, play the ball rules and limited tackles.
Tennis in its present form appeared in 1874 when Major Walter Clopton Wingfield patented Lawn Tennis. Standardised rules, court dimensions established by the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and there you have it…1877 the first Wimbledon Championships.
So…they’re all ball sports, they all originated in the late 1800s; they all have standardised rules and they are all played in teams. Well technically Tennis is an individual sport but there’s doubles, that’s a team. They are globally popular, they are physically demanding and here’s something our Eddies Men will groan about, they develop transferable skills.
Playing these sports will enhance communication skills, develop the ability to work in a team, grow cooperative strategies and trust. Problem solving and strategic thinking, decision making skills and resilience all emerge through play. Take these skills, add in a touch of confidence and a little “it’s not about you” and you have leadership.
“Great leaders never set out to be leaders, they set out to make a difference. It’s not about the role it’s about the goal.” Lisa Haisha
So, in the Eddies journey our main game — I like to call it Long Game — starts with as do the sports above, preseason training. Life here begins as a Rookie and finishes with graduation to the world beyond these grounds, at the top of the Mary Street hill. If leadership is about making a difference; if it’s about the goal not the role — how do you score that goal?
Well, it takes a team to score a goal, an Eddies Team.
In every team there will be solid dependable players, exceptional, talented players and key game changing players. There will be those who are involved in every play, those who drop in when needed and those who hide in the outfield and hope the ball never comes their way.
In the middle of all this is the player who knows the team, who sees the difference that can be made and leads the way toward scoring the goal.
They blend dependable players into impressive units to make sure everyone’s talents are involved in every move. They know the strengths of the talented unpredictable players, teaming exceptional skills with solid strategies to make that difference; to score that goal in this Long Game. Finally, they wander to the outfield, to those who may not see their part in the team. They take time to bring them into the field of play more fully and as best as they can, contribute their talents to the team that will make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of those in the College.
Today we announced our Eddies Student Leadership Team for 2026.
Leaders listen and learn. Leaders act and serve. Leaders are responsible to the Team and for the Team.
It’s not about the role; it’s about the goal; making a difference. Leadership at Eddies is about being with the team, in the team and for the team, bringing the team with you every step of the way, one small step at a time.
There is an Afghan Proverb that says something like:
If you think you are leading and you look back to see no one is with you, then you are only out on a walk by yourself.
The Eddies Team is here to work with our young men, in life, in learning and in leadership. If they look to those who stand with them every day, then our Eddies men will never walk alone.
