With a backdrop of heart-pounding escapades, daring protagonists and uncharted territories, ‘adventure’ is a timeless and captivating narrative tradition. In the vast landscape of storytelling, this genre lights the way. It stands as a beacon of excitement, exploration and intrigue, beckoning listeners, readers and viewers to step out of their ordinary lives and venture into the unknown. Whether it be through the pages of a book, the screen of a movie or the levels of a game, intense engagement reigns supreme.
Typical of the adventure genre is the presence of a bold and resourceful protagonist. Often, they’re thrust into extraordinary circumstances. They push the boundaries of their capabilities, navigate treacherous surroundings and face formidable foes.
Indiana Jones fearlessly delved into ancient ruins in search of relics, Bilbo Baggins embarked on an unexpected journey through Middle-earth and Katniss Everdeen, volunteered to take her younger sister's place in a deadly competition (something to do with being hungry I believe). These characters resonate with us because they embody determination and resilience and hopefully inspire others to embark on their own metaphorical journeys.
A seamless blend of action, suspense and exploration, we usually begin with a quest or goal. The quest leads to a journey filled with obstacles and challenges and the whole thing finishes with a satisfying ending. Embedded deeply in each adrenaline-pumping sequence lies a deeper layer of meaning. These tales often serve as allegories, reflections of our inner struggles, our triumphs. They invite us to confront our fears, embrace change and discover our hidden strengths.
Adventure-wise, there are high-stakes chases; there are pulse-pounding battles; there are nail-biting cliff-hangers and at Eddies in August, there are Subject Selection Nights; our version of adventure, choose your own adventure.
Our Eddies Men from Years 7 to 10 select the subjects they will study next year. Year 7 and 8 students select their adventure more as an exploration, testing the waters in new environments. Year 9 men, somewhat further into the voyage, become more adventurous; preferences and skills are paired with destinations and goals, goals that become clearer as they transition from Middle School. Year 10s look to engage in their last great Eddies adventure, their senior years, Years 11 and 12.
Venturing into the somewhat unknown, our young men have the opportunity to select and follow a personalised learning pathway. With a wide spectrum of possible futures, their pathway will prepare them for the choices they will need to make post school.
Subject Selection Booklets and Guides are available on EDE for students, parents and caregivers. Information found here can assist in making decisions about goals and objectives. Each of our young men commences their years here as the protagonist of their own adventure story. For some of our young men there may not be a clear final destination; their pathway, their learning adventure will act as a journey of discovery. Choose your own adventure is about honing basic knowledge and oh so very important skills. These pathway choices invite our Eddies Men to confront fears, embrace change and discover the hidden strengths that will place them in the ‘box seat’ for their post school journey.
Parents and caregivers, our Eddies Team, over the next few years there will be celebrations; there will defeats; there will be twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. Together we support our Eddies Men as best we can, giving advice and setting boundaries when they need it; giving them understanding and love and importantly, gratitude that we share in this, their journey into the unknown, their big adventure.
