Letter to SEC Community - Coronavirus Update

11 March 2020

Dear St Edmund's Community,

Health and educational authorities have been releasing constant and consistent information about precautions schools can take in dealing with the Novel Coronavirus (COVID 19). At present we are aware of no confirmed or suspected cases of COVID 19 at the College.

Risk Management Plan

In response to this information the College will be implementing a risk management plan and we seek your support as part of our community's responsibility to follow Queensland Health guidelines.

In developing this plan, we have taken into consideration:

  • Government, QCEC and EREA directives
  • the need for risk minimisation to the community
  • the need to maintain active communication
  • students and staff who present with symptoms on or off campus
  • education and preventative measures
  • tours, immersions, trips and other College activities

Flu-like Symptoms

Please be aware the COVID 19 virus may cause the following flu-like symptoms

  • Fever
  • Sore Throat
  • Continuous cough or sneezing
  • Extreme nasal congestion

Student Procedures

To minimise the risk of spreading the infection throughout the community, the College will be implementing the following procedures as part of its risk management plan.

Students who present at school with flu-like symptoms

  1. Will be sent to the student office for assessment
  2. Parents/caregivers will be notified and asked to take the student home
  3. Medical advice should be sought, and Coronavirus testing done if advised
  4. Students will require a medical clearance before returning to school
  5. The College will require notification of any positive test for Coronavirus

Students who develop flu-like symptoms at home.

  1. Should not attend school
  2. Medical advice should be sought, and Coronavirus testing done if advised
  3. The College will require notification of any positive test for Coronavirus
  4. Students will require a medical clearance before returning to school

For families who have a member who is currently quarantined it is wise for students to remain home even if they are not showing symptoms.

Where students have tested positive for COVID 19 the College will seek and follow direction from Queensland Health.

Preventative Hygiene

We urge everyone to be vigilant about health and hygiene. To support this, the College will be enacting the following simple hygiene practices:

  • Clean hands with soap and water often
  • Cover you r nose and mouth with a tissue or flexed elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • Avoid contact with anyone who has flu-like symptoms
  • Introduction of a non-contact greeting in lieu of close contact greetings eg handshakes

Sport, Events, Tours and Activities

Given the latest information,

  • all local events and activities will continue as planned
  • Sporting fixtures will continue as scheduled
  • China and Kokoda trips are currently suspended
  • Easter tours are currently doubtful

Thank you for your support during this unprecedented event. As always, the welfare of our young men is a priority, so too is the welfare of those who are vulnerable in our community. We will continue to take advice and direction from relevant authorities. Any changes to our procedures or programs will be communicated to you as the situation develops.

Yours sincerely

Ray Celegato
